How to book a Medi-Cal ride in Sacramento and Stockton

Plan phone numbers for Sacramento and San Joaquin counties, what to say, and what to do if a ride goes wrong.

Medi-Cal (California Medicaid) covers two kinds of rides to covered health services when you have no other way to get there:

  • Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) — wheelchair vans, litter/gurney vans or ambulance when your condition requires them. Your provider usually must complete a Physician Certification Statement (PCS).
  • Non-Medical Transportation (NMT) — car, van, taxi, rideshare or transit when you can travel seated without medical equipment.

In California you book through your Medi-Cal managed care plan, not a single statewide broker. The Member Services number is on your plan card.

Common questions

Who do I call to book a Medi-Cal ride in Sacramento or Stockton?

Call the Member Services number on your Medi-Cal managed care plan card. California has no single statewide ride broker; your plan arranges the ride.

What is the difference between NEMT and NMT?

NEMT is for riders who need a wheelchair van, gurney/litter van or ambulance because of their medical condition (usually with a PCS form). NMT is a regular car, van, taxi, rideshare or transit ride when you can travel seated.

What if I do not know my plan?

Call Medi-Cal Health Care Options at 1-800-430-4263 (TTY 1-800-430-7077).

Does Medi-Cal cover wheelchair and stretcher rides?

Yes, as NEMT when medically needed for a covered service. Tell the plan you use a wheelchair or stretcher when you book.
