How much does a private-pay medical ride cost?
Most companies charge a base fee for pickup plus a charge per mile. The type of ride matters most: a stretcher ride can cost several times what a wheelchair van does.
Updated October 2026
| Ride type | Base fee | Per mile |
|---|---|---|
| Ambulatory (walking) | $25 to $65 | $2 to $5 |
| Wheelchair van | $45 to $120 | $3 to $6 |
| Stretcher | About $100 to more than $500 | $5 to $16 |
Typical weekday ranges as of mid-2026. Prices vary by city and company.
What adds to the price
- Evenings, weekends and holidays: often 25% to 50% more.
- Bariatric equipment for riders over the standard weight limit.
- Waiting time if the driver stays during the appointment.
- Stairs, especially for stretcher rides.
- Long trips outside the company’s usual service area.
Getting an accurate quote
Tell the company the ride type, both addresses, the appointment length, whether the driver should wait, and any stairs or equipment. Ask for the total in writing. A round trip to a regular appointment, like dialysis, is worth asking about separately; some companies discount repeat rides.
Before you pay
Check whether a benefit could cover the ride. See who pays for medical rides, and look for free and low-cost programs on your city page.
